Potters Win One Game Playoff

Frederick earns the playoff win.

The Potters won the one game playoff against the Medford Rogues on Monday night by a score of 12-4. The Potters were able to seaze momentum early when starter Jakob Frederick worked out of a first inning bases loaded jam. The Potters would have their first 5 batters retired until Zach Patterson reached on an error and Matt Lopez followed with a 2 out single to put 2 runners in the 2nd inning for JC Santini. Santini crushed a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall for a 3 run home run that would set the tone early for the Potters. "I don't have enough good things to say abour JC Santini. He's come in here late and completely changed the way our club feels. He's impressive behind the plate and he did more damage again today." said Manager Ryan Stevens after the game about his starting catcher.

Frederick would allow another runner in the 2nd but was quickly erased on the double play turned on the next batter while Frederick wouldn't allow another base runner until the 6th inning. Frederick allowed a leadoff walk in the 6th inning and with the Potters only up 5-0 at the time, Manager Ryan Stevens made the move to Ryan Gil, ending Fredericks night. Gil would walk a better and strike out two but on a balk call, he allowed the run to score. With one on and two out in the inning, Stevens then turned to Craig Schmich who would strike out the final batter of the inning to limit the damage to just one run and making the score 5-1 heading into the bottom of the 6th. Starter Jakob Frederick's final line was 5 IP 3 hits 3 walks 1 run 6 strikeouts and Ryan Stevens said afterwards, "He gave us a chance to win and that's what he's done all season. I couldn't have asked for more from him and I know he would have wanted to stay in there but he was great tonight and gave the team a lot of confidence out there."

The Potters would respond to the one run the Rogues scored with 4 runs of their own in the inning. The Potters scored all 4 runs with 2 outs as Matt Lopez doubled home Zach Patterson, Larry Fonseca singled home Lopez, and JJ Santana doubled home Santini and Fonseca. The Potters could smell the victory after being up 9-1 through 6 innings. The Rogues would get 3 runs back however as a Cole Carder 3 run home run cut the lead to 9-4. The Potters would once again respond however with 3 runs of their own as a Charles Middleton pinch hit single drove in Brian Morley, a JC Santini double drove in Charles Middleton and a Larry Fonseca single scored Matt Lopez and put the Potters up 12-4.

Erik Lopez would work another scoreless inning in relief as he worked in the 8th inning. Then Tyler Cochran would strike out the side in the nith to preserve the 12-4 victory and advancing the Potters to the championship round.

In what might go unnoticed in the box score with so many notable performances was Larry Fonseca's 2-4 with 2 RBI singles night. Manager Ryan Stevens said that "Fonseca is the Derek Jeter for this team. He is the captain of this team, as he goes, we go. It's not the vocal stuff, it's the go out there and play everyday and make every play. He leads by example and he has been huge for us all year long."

Some other notable performances is Matt Lopez going 2-4 with an RBI and 3 runs scored. Will Law went 2-5 with an RBI.

The Potters will continue their championship run on Wednesday to take on the Chico Heat in a 3 game series that starts in Lincoln. Gates will open at 5:30 and first pitch is 6:35. You can buy tickets here: Tickets
